Baru-baru ini saya searching di internet untuk mencari referensi Digital Pocket Camera, kebetulan anak sulung saya sudah mulai gemar "jeprat-jepret". Ada hal menarik yang saya kira layak dikemukakan, yakni mengenaiaplikasi Image Stabilization dalam Digital Camera, khususnya kelas Pocket.

Seperti diketahui Image Stabilization diterapkan oleh berbagai manufaktur camera dengan berbagai varian nama, seperti:
• Canon = Image Stabilization (IS)
• Nikon = Vibrate Reduction (VR)
• Minolta (alm) = Anti Shake (AS)
• Sony = Steady Shot (SS)
• Panasonic = Mega Optical Image Stabilization (Mega OIS) --- dst.

Image Stabilization itu sendiri, dimaksudkan untuk mengurangi image-blur yang diakibatkan oleh kurang stabilnya pegangan tangan fotografer (hand-held).

Pada dasarnya, proses Image Stabilization dibagi menjadi dua, saya ilustrasikan secara sederhana sbb. :

Lens Shift System

Diterapkan oleh: Canon, Panasonic (Leica), Nikon dsb.

Sensor Shift System

Diterapkan oleh: Minolta (alm), Sony, Pentax, Olympus dsb.

Cara kerja Image Stabilization adalah dengan dipergunakannya gyro-sensor untuk memonitor gerakan camera, kemudian gyro-sensor tsb. mengirim data pada dynamic-part, apakah itu lensa pada system Lens Shift atau CCD/CMOS pada Sensor Shift, untuk mengkompensasi gerakan camera. Sehingga image yang dihasilkan, pada derajat tertentu, akan lebih stabil.
[ Sedangkan, mana yang lebih efektif Lens Shift System atau Sensor Shift System, itu lain lagi ceritanya ]

Tapi akhir-akhir ini, saya temukan istilah Digital atau Electronic Image Stabilization, tentu dengan berbagai varian nama, seperti Digital Vibrate Reduction, Electronic Anti Shake dan seterusnya.

Nah, pada system ini, sama sekali tidak ada bagian yang bergerak untuk mengkompensasi gerakan camera. Tidak ada gyro-sensor. Digital Image Stabilization, tak lain dan tak bukan, hanyalah setting otomatis camera untuk memilih sensitifitas (ISO) pada derajat yang lebih tinggi. Sehingga dengan naiknya ISO, tentu kecepatan shutter juga naik. Dengan kecepatan shutter tinggi diharapkan terjadi 'moment freeze', image terhindar dari blur.

Tentu, hal itu benar adanya. Tapi yang mesti diingat adalah, harga yang mesti dibayar dg menggunakan ISO tinggi pada Digital Pocket Camera. Yakni, NOISE. Digital Pocket Camera menggunakan sensor (CCD) yang sangat kecil, pada umumnya berkisar antara: 1/2.5" s.d. 1/1.8". Ukuran sensor kecil ini, mengakibatkan noise yang kentara pada ISO 200 ke atas. Dari berbagai situs Reviewer terkemuka, bisa anda lihat, semua Digital Pocket Camera menderita penyakit yang sama pada ISO 400 ke atas, yakni detail image yang berkurang drastis akibat smear serta gangguan (luminansi/chroma) noise lainnya. Bisa dikatakan, High ISO pada Digital Pocket Camera adalah percuma.

Saya berpendapat bahwa Digital Image Stabilization adalah Pembodohan Massal. Hanya 'gimmick', akal-akalan saja dari manufaktur Camera untuk menarik serta mengiming-imingi 'first-user' Digital Camera, yang memang merupakan konsumen utama kelas Pocket (entry level). Mengapa saya katakan demikian? Tanpa embel-embel Digital Image Stabilization pun, user kan bisa dengan mudah men-set Camera pada ISO tinggi. Karena ISO setting sudah menjadi menu standar setiap Digital Camera.

Yang saya prihatinkan adalah, 'trik' ini dipakai oleh hampir semua pabrikan besar Camera Digital. Hanya Canon dan Panasonic (Leica), yang (jujur) mencantumkan tag Image Stabilization, pada camera yang memang benar-benar mempunyai unit stabilizer (gyro-sensor) system didalamnya.

Jadi, bagi anda yang mau membeli Digital Pocket Camera, ada baiknya anda untuk melihat spesifikasi camera di site-site reviewer, seperti dpreview.com, dcresource.com, cameras.co.uk dsb. Dpreview contohnya, pada spesifikasi Camera yang mereka buat, kolom Image Stabilization ditulis NO, walau secara lantang produsen Camera tersebut mengumbar fasilitas Digital atau Electronic Image Stabilization sebagai salah satu feature unggulan produk mereka.
